Description:
Walnut dining table was made from pews salvaged from the 1875 – 1904 Wesley Chapel Methodist Episcopal Church, now Avon United Methodist Church, that stood near North Lawn Cemetery, very close to where the existing church stands (2020). A brick building was erected in 1904 when the tracks for the Indianapolis & Western Traction Company (the interurban) came nearly to the front door. That church stood approximately where the Avon School Corporation Administration building is at 7203 E US 36. In 1968 the current church was erected at 6850 E US 36 in Avon, Indiana. This table was built about 1905 by William N. Barker, son of William Riley and Louisa Hurin Barker, and brother of Minnie Barker Parsons. The Barker and Hurin families were early pioneers of Washington Township and were prominent member of the Avon Methodist Church from its earliest years. William N. Barker built this table for his sister Minnie Barker Parsons. It was used as the kitchen table in the Norman and Minnie Barker Parsons households near Plainfield, then at their longtime home place on the “Hadley Farm” on Tilden Road, Hendricks County from 1923 tp 1975. Upon retirement from farming in 1975, Ed Parsons refinished the table for use at his new house near Stilesville, Indiana where it saw duty at many family gatherings. Around 1992 Ed’s youngest son Keith took custody of this treasured heirloom, where it now (1999) graces the household of Keith and Susan Parsons of Avon. The table was made to accommodate 8 walnut leaves, which can expand its 4-foot length to 10 feet.
