Summary
Summary
The chilling story of two conflicted sisters, their murdered brother, and the secrets a family hoped they'd never have to face.
The murder of jazz musician and social activist Markus Peña doesn't come as a surprise to his estranged sisters. Melinda and Emily Peña know their controversial brother had enemies. After all, even they hadn't spoken to Markus since their mother's funeral two years ago.
Who killed Markus? Was it someone trying to keep his latest protest song from publication? Was it the powerful and secretive uncle of his ex-girlfriend Rebecca? Or was it one of the other women Markus had callously abandoned?
To unravel the truth, Melinda and Emily must first face their own demons. Melinda, a former social worker, suffers from PTSD--haunted by the people she failed to help and unable to maintain meaningful relationships. Emily also pushes people away--afraid she'll get hurt and afraid they'll find out she's Three Strikes: a masked vigilante who violently punishes abusive men.
Markus wasn't a good man, but he was family. And it's up to his sisters to uncover his lifetime of lies and the truth of his death.
Haunting, gripping, and relevant, No Home for Killers explores the conflicts that tear families apart--and the tragedies that force them back together.

Publisher's Weekly Review
At the start of this grim, so-so thriller from Aymar (The Unrepentant), Melinda Peña, a former social worker specializing in helping abused women in McLean, Va., learns that her estranged brother, Markus, a musician who was also an abuser, has been murdered. Since Markus had many enemies, there are plenty of suspects. Markus's ex-girlfriend, Rebecca Winters, thinks her wealthy uncle, Victor Winters, a commercial real estate developer who's also a sex-trafficker, killed Markus. Melinda and her sister, Emily Peña, secretly a vigilante who preys upon male abusers, join forces with Rebecca to investigate Markus's murder and his relationship to Victor. Meanwhile, numerous flashbacks that interrupt the main plot reveal the women's own deadly secrets. Brutality abounds, especially in scenes involving sex workers who are abused by Victor. This dismaying portrait of a tragically dysfunctional family is loaded with both interpersonal and individual psychological conflicts played out through shallow characterizations and voiced in often awkward dialogue, especially between Melinda and Emily. It's sad, unconvincing, and not for the squeamish. Agent: Michelle Richter, Fuse Literary. (Feb.)
Kirkus Review
Think your family is dysfunctional? Welcome to the big time. The Peña siblings have never exactly been close, but the rifts between them have widened to gulfs since their mother's funeral two years ago, the last time either former social worker Melinda or nonprofit marketer Emily spoke to their brother, Markus, a well-known performer of protest songs. None of them has anything to do with their widowed father, Frank, and when they're not cocooned in their own individual problems, from Melinda's continued pursuit by David Martin, her former boss and one-night stand--a secret she struggles to keep from her partner, patent attorney Rick Walker--to Markus' well-documented record of abusive behavior, they're actively working at odds with each other. Everything changes, or at least intensifies, when sex worker Dani turns up at Melinda's place to tell her that Markus is dead. Melinda rouses herself from the guilt in which she's been wallowing, determined to track down the killer. Emily, who, operating as the masked avenger Three Strikes, has already kidnapped wife beater Jon Winters and taught him a lesson, follows a more activist path, turning to Markus' ex-girlfriend, Jon's cousin Rebecca, as her next victim. But she can't help suspecting the real culprit she should be targeting is Rebecca's uncle, the powerful and unscrupulous developer Victor Winters, whose real estate deals have already been linked to drugs and sex trafficking. A miasmal air hangs over the proceedings, but one thing is for sure: This can't end well. The perfect gift for friends worried about spending the holidays with their relatives. Things could be worse.
