Frankie's twin sister, Sofia, disappeared five years earlier, fracturing their close-knit friend group. But when Sofia's body is found, Cass and Poppy come home to Loring, North Carolina, to help Frankie figure out what happened to her sister. The women learn that Sofia had been keeping some pretty big secrets from them, secrets that may be connected to a malevolent, shadowy presence that's stalking them. Meanwhile, Frankie's employee Marya has been keeping a big secret of her own--she can see ghosts, including Sofia. In a parallel world, a mysterious girl named Finder serves a witch called Mother Mab and tries to avoid the creepy figure known as the Ossifier while she desperately pines for her only friend, a girl who used to travel through a mirror to visit once a year. The two story lines wind and twist and eventually connect in this leisurely paced, lyrically written paean to the power of friendship and chosen family. Recommend to fans of The Night Sister (2015), by Jennifer McMahon; The Return (2020), by Rachel Harrison; or Nothing but Blackened Teeth (2021), by Cassandra Khaw.
