Publisher's Weekly Review
Jonathan Wright, the charming villain of this straightforward tale of revenge from the pseudonymous Keir (Drowning with Others), has conned his way into becoming the president and CEO of Cancura, a start-up that's developed a simple way to detect childhood cancer early. Jonathan and Holly, his pediatrician wife, and their three children live in an upscale Chicago suburb. At a medical conference in Phoenix, Jonathan meets physician Jessica Meyers and recruits her to work for Cancura. The two marry after she moves to Chicago, unbeknownst to the first Mrs Wright . For his third partner, Jonathan woos Lark Robinson, an L.A. entrepreneur who designs board games, but he's in for a surprise on their wedding day. Refreshingly, Keir doesn't depict Holly, Jessica, and Lark as victims. Instead, they're all smart, well-rounded women who stand up for themselves with resolve and dignity. Readers will cheer them every step of the way to the satisfying if predictable ending. Keir is a writer to watch. Agent: Josh Getzler, Hannigan Salky Getzler Agency. (Sept.)
Booklist Review
Lark met Trip on a business visit to L.A. They spent the night together, and he offered to fund her board-game start-up rather than have her sign with a big toy company as she'd planned. Jessica moves to Chicago to work for Jon's company after medical school, believing she's going to develop new diagnostics for pediatric cancer. Pediatrician Holly lives in suburban Chicago with her three children and is used to her husband Jack's frequent business trips. The women miss clues that they are dealing with perpetual liars, until Holly realizes that something is fishy about those business trips. Meanwhile, Jessica doesn't understand why some of the lab results at Jon's company seem to show that the diagnostic products aren't working. Lark's roommate wonders why there is so little information online about Lark's boyfriend. Tension is skilfully developed in this third compulsively readable blend of thriller and women's fiction (following Drowning with Others, 2019), as the three women, seeming strangers, gradually come together and realize what they have in common. Could it be the men (or man?) in their lives? Following the enticing setup, Keir delivers a thoroughly satisfying finale in which Lark, Jessica, and Holly join forces to give "Mr. Wright" his much-deserved comeuppance.
