At the start of Krueger's superlative 10th novel featuring Tamarack County, Minn., PI Cork O'Connor (after Heaven's Keep), mining heir Max Cavanagh hires Cork to trace his missing sister, Lauren, founder of an artists' retreat-and to try to identify the sender of threatening letters to various people connected with Vermilion One, a Cavanaugh family mine, which the U.S. Department of Energy is considering for long-term nuclear waste storage. When Cork and a mine official descend into Vermilion One, they discover six bodies, five of them skeletal, which may be connected with a decades-old unsolved series of crimes known as "the Vanishings," which Cork's father looked into when he was sheriff. The sixth corpse, that of a well-dressed woman, appears to have been in the mine about a week. Rock-solid prose combines with effective characterizations and a logical if complex plot for a thrilling read. Conflicted protagonist Cork O'Connor works a case that has disturbing connections to his own family, as well as his past, in Krueger's latest (Heaven's Keep, 2009, etc.).Corcoran "Cork" O'Connor, former sheriff of fictional Tamarack County, Minn., works as a private investigator. His wife, Jo, has died, and his two grown daughters are making their lives elsewhere. His young teenage son is away for the long, hot summer, and Cork has been asked to find mine owner and millionaire Max Cavanaugh's missing sister, Lauren. Lauren is beautiful and blond and has been known to flit from place to place, but she finally ended up in Cork's neck of the woods, where she opened a center for the arts. Now Max says she's vanished and he thinks her disappearance is somehow different this time. Max's unease is bolstered by the animosity generated by a government team surveying one of the mines as a possible repository for nuclear waste. As protesters picket the mine, many involved in the survey are targeted with ominous warning notes printed in a bloody-looking font; in the meantime, Cork suffers from recurring nightmares in which he tries to save his now-dead father, but instead ends up pushing dad to his death. As Cork seeks help deciphering his dream with a longtime family friend, he makes a terrible and unanticipated discovery in a drift, or vertical passage, in the Vermilion One Mine. The discovery opens the door to a new investigation and stirs up powerful demons from Cork's past, including memories he would much rather forget. As always, Krueger's writing couples the best of literary and commercial fiction, with intelligent, well-defined characters populating the story. Although the book contains violence, the author never makes it extraneous or graphic. He is one of those rare writers who manage to keep the suspense alive until the final page.Krueger fans will find a feast in between these covers, and for those who have yet to sample his fine and evocative writing, the book offers a complex yet completely believable plot, all tied up in words sharpened by one of the modern masters of the craft.]] Copyright Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.

It's love that brings the blush of life to Ruth Rendell's singular portraits of English eccentrics. No matter how quirky their personal foibles or how penetrating her analysis of their bizarre behavior, Rendell never loses affection for her beloved crackpots. And in PORTOBELLO (Scribner, $26), that warm feeling extends to the colorful market street in London's Notting Hill where some of the city's most peculiar characters tend to gravitate. As Rendell notes approvingly in her salute to the area's rich history, vibrant personality and raffish street life, "eccentricity is the norm in the Portobello Road." Her discerning eye falls on some of the neighborhood's exceptional specimens: "Uncle Gib" Gibson, a thief who got religion in prison and is now a stern elder in the fundamentalist Church of the Children of Zebulun; Lance Platt, his layabout great-nephew, who has taken up residence in Uncle Gib's run-down house; Joel Roseman, a morbidly depressed young man who lives like "an earthworm" in a mansion-block flat where he is slowly losing his mind; and Eugene Wren, a successful dealer in fine art who has acquired a vicious addiction to a particular brand of sugar-free diet candy. Applying her formidable skills as a puppeteer, Rendell encourages the members of this cast to indulge their various obsessions in a plot that unfolds with the bleak gravity of Greek drama while following the insane logic of French farce. Joel sets everything in motion by venturing outdoors and suffering a heart attack, dropping an envelope with a large sum of money that is found by Eugene on one of his furtive hunts for a shop that sells his sweets. Further complications arise when Eugene's fiancée becomes Joel's doctor, Lance turns to burglary, Uncle Gib takes in a lodger and somebody gets killed. Although Rendell seems to be taking a dispassionate view of her characters' perverse behavior, she's a sly one, showing more sympathy for their pathetic fixations than for the prevailing social attitudes that condemn them. Despairing of ever kicking his candy craving, Eugene reflects on how his secret vice has relegated him to the reviled ranks of smokers. And while Rendell allows certain eccentrics to overcome their antisocial compulsions, she trusts that others will always find a home on the Portobello Road. It doesn't seem right that hellish places should have beautiful names. Ladyslipper Mine, the fictional focal point of William Kent Krueger's VERMILION DRIFT (Atria, $25), is an open-pit ironore mine, one of the largest in the world, while the Vermilion Drift is a horizontal mine passage, one of the oldest and deepest on Minnesota's great Iron Range. When Cork O'Connor, the private-eye hero of these rocksolid regional novels, discovers six bodies - five skeletal, one fresh - in a previously sealed tunnel off the Vermilion Drift, it's safe to say that despite its pretty moniker this underground hellhole is cursed. But even the loveliest settings, like a clearing deep in a pine forest or a spit of land overlooking a majestic lake, can be fouled by "bad medicine," as Cork discovers when he consults an Ojibwe medicine man about the women and girls who went missing from the Iron Lake Reservation over the course of a single summer many years earlier. For someone who writes such muscular prose, Krueger has a light touch that humanizes his characters. "His eyes were warm and inviting," he says of the old medicine man, "little brown suns." According to this writer's code, a hero is allowed to break down and cry, and even a murderer can die with dignity. THE DEAD DETECTIVE (Akashic, $24.95) is William Heffernan's first novel in seven years, and wherever he's been, he hasn't forgotten how to write a good, gritty police procedural. This one introduces Harry Doyle, a soulful homicide cop on the Pinellas County police force who owes his life to the officers who resuscitated him at the age of 10 after his crazy mother tried to send Harry and his younger brother to meet Jesus in heaven.
