School Library Journal Review
PreSThese fresh, bright books feature a toddler crew making sounds and exploring their environment. On each page, a child is playing, making music, dressing up, dancing, or eating; the last double-page spread shows all the children in a cheerful finale, hugging friends and showing off their toys. Gundersheimer's youngsters are true individuals, drawn in pen and watercolor with a variety of facial features, skin tones, hair styles, and expressions. They are silhouetted on a white background with a bold color border. Two words on each page describe the action or noise illustrated. Parents will find these books attractive, and staff will want to use them for lapsit programs.Linda Wicher, Highland Park Public Library, IL (c) Copyright 2010. Horn Book Review
Colorful pictures of preschoolers against white backgrounds are appealing in this pair of books that feature simple rhyming texts. The children are slightly awkward and have large eyes but are otherwise engaging. 'Splish Splash, Bang Crash' illustrates children making noise; 'Find Cat, Wear Hat' focuses on action verbs and the names of objects. From HORN BOOK 1995, (c) Copyright 2010. Booklist Review
Ages 1-3. Two simple titles in the My First Busy Preschool Books series are for the lap-sit audience. On each page a pair of words describes a bright, cheerful line-and-watercolor picture of a toddler at play. In Find Cat, the caption is a noun and a verb ("Bang POT / Wash DUCK"). In Splish Splash, the action words rhyme, and the sounds are part of the fun ("Vroom, vroom / Boom, boom"). The thick paper will survive lots of handling. The cast is multicultural; the boys play with dolls as well as trucks. Kids will recognize their world on the pages and will enjoy acting out what the words and pictures say. ~--Hazel Rochman
