K-Gr 2-Neil is the only child in Mrs. Connor's class who doesn't look forward to Valentine's Day. He emphatically declares that he gets too many frilly, pink valentines, and he doesn't want any more. When the day comes, his classmates happily exchange cards, and though Neil claims that he feels great, he really doesn't. He is isolated and unhappy until he arrives home where a surprise is waiting. Charming cartoon illustrations augment the lighthearted tone. In [cf1]One Hundred[cf1], a cold forces Hannah to miss the one-hundredth-day-of-school party, so she helps her class celebrate the one hundred and first day. In [cf2]Valentines[cf1], Neil claims he doesn't want any frilly, pink valentines but then feels conflicted when his class can talk of nothing else. Animation-type drawings add a touch of whimsy to texts that feature repetition, simple sentences, and familiar words and phrases.
