When an author event at the local library ends in murder, Jude finds herself a suspect in the waspishly witty new Fethering mystery.
Having been booked to give a talk at Fethering Library, successful author Burton St Clair invites his old friend Jude to come along. Although they haven't met for twenty years, Jude is not surprised to find that St Clair hasn't changed, with his towering ego and somewhat shaky relationship with the truth. What Jude hadn't been suspecting however was that the evening would end in sudden, violent death.
More worrying, from Jude's point of view, is the fact that the investigating police officers seem to be convinced that she herself was responsible for the crime. With the evidence stacking up against her, Jude enlists the help of her neighbour Carole not just to solve the murder but to prevent herself from being arrested for committing it.

Brett's entertaining 18th mystery set in the West Sussex seaside town of Fethering (after 2015's Killer in the Cafe) opens at an author evening at the Fethering public library. The speaker is Burton St. Clair, who has finally achieved bestseller status with his ninth novel, Stray Leaves in Autumn-a mawkish, old-fashioned romance, in the opinion of Jude Nichol, who's in the audience and knew Burton years before, when he was self-publishing his books under his real name, Al Sinclair. When Burton, who's allergic to walnuts, dies after drinking red wine tainted with walnut at the event, Jude, who was aware of his allergy, becomes a prime suspect in his murder. Naturally, she turns for help proving her innocence to fellow amateur sleuth Carole Seddon, her old friend and neighbor. Brett takes delightful potshots at the publishing world, writers, and village life, all the while providing a top-notch whodunit plot with loads of red herrings and eccentric suspects. Rolling-stone healer Jude Nicholls' reunion with her old friend Megan Sinclair's ex-husband runs into several problems, not the least of them his murder.Since Jude last saw Albert Sinclair 20 years ago, he's reinvented himself as Burton St Clair, and his latest novel, Stray Leaves in Autumn, has achieved the critical and commercial success that had repeatedly eluded him in the past. When he invites Jude to attend his talk and book signing at the Fethering Library, she willingly accepts. Several other guests, who seem less than taken with St Clair, ply him with unwelcome and variously hostile questions in Brett's archest manner, and the evening is further spoiled when St Clair clumsily comes on to Jude as they leave. Awkward as the event is, it's only a prelude to the deeper travails that begin when DI Rollins and DS Knight turn up on Jude's doorstep the next morning to inform her that St Clair has been found dead and that, as the last person known to have seen him alive, she's very much a person of interest. That interest becomes even more pointed when St Clair's death is attributed to contact with the walnuts he was allergic to and Megan informs Rollins and Knight that her marriage was broken up by St Clair's affair with Judean affair Jude can only insist never happened. With the weight of the evidence against her, Jude naturally turns for help to her neighbor Carole Seddon, who's partnered with her in solving several earlier murders (The Killing in the Caf, 2016, etc.) and looks forward with undisguised gusto to tackling this case, which Rollins and Knight continue to insist doesn't quite rise to the level of a case at all.An unabashed reincarnation of golden-age plotting and decorum, right down to the deliciously overwrought detective novel Brett imagines and quotes as having inspired the killer's nefarious schemes. *Starred Review* Longtime mystery writer Brett, known for his Charles Paris, Mrs. Pargeter, Blotto and Twinks, and Fethering series, concocts both a riotous send-up and a tribute to the kind of Golden Age mystery that gave us the clichés of the body in the library, the bumbling constable, and the brilliant amateur sleuth. In this, Brett's eighteenth Fethering novel, there is no body in the library, but there is one in the car park just outside. The plot hinges upon the movements of the people in the library just before the victim was murdered, several of whom are casual or vicious liars. Brett expands his amateur sleuths beyond the usual team of staid Carole Seldon and free-spirit Jude Nicholls to include a couple of other people eager to outwit the police. The manner of murder is as satisfyingly bizarre and complicated as in any Golden Age puzzler. The murder victim, Burton St Clair, a suddenly successful author invited to give a reading at Fethering Library, is himself a self-promoting liar, cheat, and philanderer, the type of murder victim whose demise quickly generates a long list of suspects. Characters here include both those justifiably skewered and sympathetically drawn in a plot that keeps on surprising. Brett won the UK's Diamond Dagger Award in 2014 for his contributions to crime writing. This may just be the best Brett novel yet.--Fletcher, Connie Copyright 2018 Booklist
