Summary
Fifty BARs have been stolen from a US army base in Northern Ireland. Billy Boyle is sent by his uncle Ike Eisenhower to recover the weapons which might be used in a German-sponsored IRA uprising. Bodies begin to accumulate as Billy's Boston-Irish upbringing and IRA sympathies are unexpectedly challenged. As he is about to learn, there are rogues on both sides.

A twisting, turning plot drives Benn's gripping fourth WWII mystery to feature Lt. Billy Boyle (after 2008's Blood Alone). Billy, a former Boston cop and a nephew by marriage to General Eisenhower, on whose staff he serves, receives orders in late 1943 to look into a raid on a U.S. Army depot in Northern Ireland. The thieves took 50 new Browning automatic rifles plus 200,000 rounds of ammunition. A few miles from the depot, the body of a known IRA man was found shot in the back of the head with a pound note in his hand-the mark of an informer. Billy's military superiors suspect the Germans are supporting an IRA uprising. As an Irish-American whose family is sympathetic to the Republican cause, Billy struggles to remain impartial as he investigates the various factions on both sides of the Catholic-Protestant divide. Can a resourceful GI throw a wrench in the German war machine by cutting off its support of the IRA? World War II soldier and sometime sleuth Billy Boyle (Blood Alone, 2008, etc.) is enjoying a brief respite in Jerusalem, on leave as part of General Eisenhower's retinue. Even in the company of best girl Diana Seaton, it's hard to relax while the war still rages. Diana, a British intelligence agent working as a liaison for Eisenhower, has failed to tell Billy that she's leaving to go back to active espionage. When she does, their breakup is bitter, though of course they'll meet again. It primes Billy to charge headlong into his next assignment: going to Ireland to track down a cache of Browning Automatic Rifles (BARs) believed stolen by the IRA. While England battles the Nazis, the IRA is bombing British cities. An Irish lad from the streets of Boston, Billy is loaded with opinions about his ancestors' home. His preconceptions are challenged almost immediately, and he's put on the defensive when the British soldiers he's assigned to work beside sneeringly assume that he's Catholic. One of his colleagues is killed by a sniper; best guess is that Billy was the intended target. Undeterred by a mounting death toll, Billy investigates the theft and the murders. Deftly keeps our hero's wide-eyed verve as he tackles a more complex plot that takes the series further from whodunit toward thriller. Copyright Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.

In Benn's fourth World War II mystery, Billy Boyle, special investigator with General Eisenhower's staff, is posted to Northern Ireland, where his task is to recover 50 high-powered Browning rifles believed stolen by the IRA, which may be plotting to support Germany against the despised British. For Boyle, a Boston cop before the war, whose father and brother, also cops, are devoted U.S. members of the IRA, the case is fraught with ambiguity: despite his natural sympathies, he is forced to work with protestant cops from Ulster in an attempt to thwart the coalition with the Nazis. As matters progress, however, and as dead bodies begin to accumulate, Boyle finds himself awash in shades of gray: Catholics and Protestants alike capable of both good and evil, conflicting ideals on personal and even military fronts. Benn handles the Irish question effectively, giving context to the troubles and capably showing how WWII introduced an explosive new element to an already volatile situation. He falters a bit, as he has in the past, when romantic relationships take center stage, but this remains an entertaining series based on fascinating historical premises.--Ott, Bill Copyright 2009 Booklist

Readers who can't get enough of Maisie Dobbs, the intrepid World War I battlefield nurse in Jacqueline Winspear's novels, or Hester Latterly, who saw action in the Crimean War in a series of novels by Anne Perry, are bound to be caught up in the adventures of Bess Crawford, the courageous British army nurse introduced by Charles Todd in A DUTY TO THE DEAD (Morrow/HarperCollins, $24.99). The strong-willed and self-determined daughter of a retired colonel, Bess shows her mettle when the hospital ship she's serving on hits a German mine and goes down off the coast of Greece in the fall of 1916. Recovering at home with a badly broken arm, Bess is reminded of the promise she made to a dying soldier named Arthur Graham, who begged her to deliver an urgent message to his brother. ("Tell Jonathan that I lied," he instructed her. "I did it for Mother's sake. But it has to be set right.") Honorbound, Bess makes her way to the Kent countryside, described in precise period detail with a lovely touch of rue for its never-to-be-recovered way of life. Here the story takes on Gothic intonations as Bess discovers that the Graham family has no intention of righting any past wrongs, especially those pertaining to the eldest son, who has been locked up in an asylum for killing a maid when he was 14. Bess is made of sterner stuff than Ian Rutledge, the shell-shocked Scotland Yard inspector in the World War I series for which the mother-and-son team who write as Charles Todd is primarily known. But while her sensibility is as crisp as her narrative voice, Bess is a compassionate nurse who responds with feeling when asked to care for a traumatized veteran who has been callously shunned as a coward and a menace by the villagers. "It isn't madness," she insists. "Shell shock is an affliction of the brain." However cogently argued, her plea for the humane treatment of troubled minds seems all the more hopeless when applied to the eldest Graham son, who escapes from the madhouse and forces Bess to help him solve the mysteries of his traumatic past. Neither as tradition-bound as Hester Latterly, her 19th-century predecessor, nor as enlightened as Maisie Dobbs, who was a student of Freudian psychology, Todd's heroine is a new woman - and her own woman. Pragmatic in the face of danger, she takes a brave stand on behalf of the mentally wounded, their suffering worsened by the isolation imposed on them through the fear and ignorance of the people who once loved them. In the process, she becomes the champion of all those lost and forgotten in war. The Yanks don't do war like the Brits, and James R. Benn's World War II mysteries are a case in point. In the first three novels in this lively (and surprisingly thoughtful) adventure series, Benn's hero, Lt. Billy Boyle, a rookie Irish cop from South Boston, was still a "rosy-cheeked youth" under the protection of his distant relative, "Uncle Ike," who sent him on exciting secret missions where he made exotic friends. It was dangerous, but it was also a lot of fun. Billy is still the charmer in EVIL FOR EVIL (Soho, $25), which lands him in a United States Army arms depot in Northern Ireland, investigating the theft of a shipment of 50 high-powered rifles. But war can take the romance out of boyish ideals, and Billy's loyalties to his ancestral sod are tested when he finds himself working with British and Ulster authorities on a tip that the I.R.A. stole the weapons, possibly with German help. Characters as distinctive as their finetuned slang walk Billy through the thickets of this treacherous political landscape. Only when he's made peace with his conflicted soul ("I felt guilty, wishing God hadn't given me the sense to see two sides of a thing"), can he recognize this divided country for what it is: home. After turning out some funny books about the perils of life in suburbia, Linwood Barclay jumped the fence and started writing with dead seriousness on the same subject. In his fourth outing (after Blood Alone), Billy Boyle travels to Ireland to solve the mystery of 50 automatic rifles stolen from an American depot. Suspicion falls on the IRA, and Boyle-a Boston Catholic cop who was raised to view the IRA as modern-day Robin Hoods-finds himself unsure of whom to trust in the land of his forefathers. The theft is followed by murders, and Boyle begins to understand that more is concealed in the Irish rain than can be explained by sectarian rivalry. Verdict Benn's novel should appeal to mystery readers who favor the period or location, fans of war stories, and anyone who likes a good puzzle or a heart-pounding adventure, not to mention devotees of the series.
