Summary
If you're a big sister, you probably know lots of things already. But when it comes to little sisters, every girl could use a few extra tips! This guide covers important topics like "cuteness" (thank goodness she's the cute one now--what a hassle that was!), "tickling" (includes handy cutout that details ticklish spots), and "sharing" (one cupcake for her, two for you). It's the book no sister should be without!

School Library Journal Review
PreS-Gr 2-Metcalf's enumerated guide is a joyous celebration of the special (if sometimes frustrating) relationship between female siblings. Beginning with a new arrival's first moments home from the hospital, "warm and squishy like a freshly baked loaf of bread," the author acknowledges the viewpoint of older sisters in this warmly humorous and honest book. She officially addresses such topics as cuteness, fun and games, tickling, style ("Some have it./...some don't"), clothes, makeup (otherwise known as markers), sharing, making stuff, cleaning up, and the inexpressible comfort of a sister to share a bed in the middle of the night. "When night comes, it's time to put aside all the day's fighting and be kind to each other." While the child offers some sharp commentary on fairness, jealousies, and everyday irritations, negativity takes a backseat to the positive when summarizing the extraordinary gift of a little sister. Small, loosely limned images merge bright color with pen and ink outlines, while a mixture of fonts, plenty of white space, and spare placement of text add a crisp simplicity to each page. VERDICT Speaking with the authority of little girls confidently exploring their unique role in the family, this title is a general purchase for all picture book collections.-Mary Elam, Learning Media Services, Plano ISD, TX © Copyright 2015. Under the guise of an instruction manual, a big sister guides soon-to-be big sisters through the ins and outs of little sisters, from a diagram of "main ticklish spots" to advice on sharing ("They share your cakes, your cookies, your toys, your clothes..."). Loosely drawn vignettes generously surrounded by white space provide a pleasant backdrop to the amusing and witty text. (c) Copyright 2016. Kirkus Review
Thirteen tips explain sibling foibles, told from the perspective of one big sister to all big sisters everywhere. A precocious young narrator breaks it down for readers: babies are cute and cuddly but hard to understand. Luckily, there is one big sister who has it all figured out, and she is willing to share her newfound knowledge. Broken into 13 categories, from "On the Move" to "Style" and "Sharing," she explains the intricacies of having a younger sister. The "Getting Started" section begins when a young baby arrives ("They are warm and squishy, like a freshly baked loaf of breadbut you should NOT put butter on them"), but most of the text focuses on a slightly older sibling relationship. This little girl's younger sister is old enough to follow her around, copy her, and destroy her thingsall of the usual tensions. Luckily, tickling can defuse any situation (a handy cutout diagram shows the best spots to target). In the end, all fights are put aside at bedtime, and sweet snuggles abound. Breezy illustrations capture messy mops of hair and shared sisterly smiles; both sisters are white (literallyexposed flesh and hair are simply outlined in quick strokes of black. Less a guide for preparation for a new baby than a humorous look at sibling dynamics for those who have weathered the storm and are now ready to laugh.
