Summary
Three unlikely allies team up for a night of rebellion, romance, and revenge in a high-stakes dramedy from acclaimed young author Abby McDonald.
They've spent years at the same high school without speaking a word to one another, but that's all about to change. Popular Bliss was having the perfect prom until she found her BFF and boyfriend making out in the back of a limo. Bad girl Jolene wouldn't be caught dead at the prom, yet here she is, trussed up in pink ruffles, risking her reputation for some guy -- some guy who is forty minutes late. And shy, studious, über-planner Meg never counted on her date's standing her up and leaving her idling in the parking lot outside the prom. Get ready for The Anti-Prom, Abby McDonald's hilarious, heart-tugging tale about three girls and one unforgettable prom night.

School Library Journal Review
Gr 9 Up-Abby McDonald has written a story (Candlewick, 2011) featuring fully-formed, flawed, and relatable characters. Three unlikely companions-Bliss (perfect and popular), Jolene (wild child and possible felon), and Meg (wallflower with a car)-are thrown together for one evening of plotting, scheming, adventure, criminal activity, and a whole lot of self-discovery. When Bliss leaves the prom to retrieve a forgotten lip gloss from her limo, she finds her supposed friend draped all over her boyfriend in the back seat. Jolene's prom night is not going well either. She's trying to deal with her own betrayals by the men in her life when Bliss recruits her for a revenge plan. Jolene grudgingly agrees to help because bailing with her makes more sense than spending the rest of the miserable evening at prom. When Meg, who is stood up by her date, literally runs into the two girls, she agrees to give them a ride and ends up living more in that one night than she has in all the years since her mom died. Julia Whelan gives each character a distinct voice, and her energy level is spot-on throughout the emotional roller coaster that was supposed to be their perfect prom night. Publisher's Weekly Review
In McDonald's (Boys, Bears, and a Serious Pair of Hiking Boots) third novel for teens, three dissimilar upperclassgirls-popular Bliss, bad girl Jolene, and shy romantic Meg-find that they have something in common on prom night: they have each been wronged. Bliss catches her best friend making out with her boyfriend, and both Jolene and Meg get stood up. Bliss wonders if all her social climbing has been worth it ("I worked so hard to get everything perfect, the way high school is supposed to be. And now I'm left with this ache in my chest, knowing that it was all a lie"); Jolene resents her father's desertion of the family; and Meg is sick of being invisible. Their quest for revenge takes them everywhere, from Dairy Queen to the local college and Jolene's father's office. Alternating between the three girls' perspectives, the novel is lightly wicked fun in formal wear, filled with bickering, breaking and entering, and quick getaways. The girls basically play to type, but grow enough to make their journey an amusing diversion. Ages 14-up. (Apr.) (c) Copyright PWxyz, LLC. All rights reserved.
Horn Book Review
Bliss discovers her boyfriend and best friend hooking up in the limo. Rebel Jolene actually shows up to prom--in "freaking ruffles"--but her date doesn't. Sheeplike Meg is stood up, too, then recruited by the others for a night of hijinks and revenge. McDonald relies on stereotypes in molding the three characters, whose light, entertaining voices take turns narrating this wish-fulfillment adventure. (c) Copyright 2011. Sophomore Switch(2009) both fun and substantive will be disappointed with this effort, the literary equivalent of cotton candy: sweet and easy, but dissolves on contact.(Fiction. 14 up)]] Copyright Kirkus Reviews, used with permission.
Booklist Review
Stories that take place in one crazy night are practically their own genre. Thankfully, McDonald's entry makes that night feel like a rush, not a slog. Three girls Bliss (the snobby one), Jolene (the bad one), and Meg (the shy one) are each having nightmarish proms when their lots are thrown together by chance. Before the night's over, the girls will each come through for each other in different ways when they're not bickering. As in the excellent Sophomore Switch (2009), McDonald instills more intelligence than you'd expect from such a plot while not skimping on the simple pleasures, either. Makeover scene? Check.--Kraus, Daniel Copyright 2010 Booklist
