She attended Central Normal College that summer and in the fall began her teaching career at Shiloh Country School. Later she continued her studies and earned a B.A. Degree at Indiana University, where she had the distinction of being the first female math major. She married Wendell Loy in 1925. Although she and Wendell never had children Mae always said that her students were her children. Mae taught for 42 years, retiring from Avon High School. Mae remained in Avon, active in various civic organizations.
