This is a certificate of election for the officers of the Joseph C Miller Post 498 of the Department of Indiana G.A.R. (Grand Army of the Republic) dated December 5, 1908. John Douglass, Commander; George W. Gray, Sr. V. Commander; Seth J Huron, Jr. V. Commander; A. A. Parsons, Adjutant; Barney Gossett, Quartermaster. The Joseph C Miller Post 498 was chartered April 2, 1887 and disbanded in 1914. Joseph Cooper Miller (1839 - 1863) served in Company I of the 7th Regiment of Indiana Volunteers. Miller mustered in August 24, 1861 in Indianapolis and will killed November 30, 1863 at Mine River, Virginia during the Mine Run Campaign of November 26-December 2. Joseph's brother, James S. Miller (1841-1898) was a charter member of the post and it is believed James had something to do with the name selection.
