Description
Infant son of J. A. and M. E. Ross died on October 19, 1874. He was the son of John A. Ross (1838 - October 27, 1902) and Mary Elizabeth (Gibbs) Ross (January 6, 1853 - July, 16, 1927). John and Mary were married on June 20, 1871. According to: ~~Plainfield Messenger, Plainfield, IN 25 Aug 1927~~ Mary Elizabeth Ross was born Jan. 6th, 1853, aged 74 years, 6 months and 10 days and she fell asleep in Jesus on July 16th, 1927. She was born on a farm near Plainfield, Hendricks County. She was a daughter of George A. and Louisa A. Gibbs. She was married to John A. Ross June 20, 1871 and continued to reside on the farm to which she moved when she was married for a period of 42 years. In 1913 after the death of her husband who departed this life on Oct. 27, 1902, she disposed of the farm and with her son moved to a farm on the National Road. But during her illness of the last three years and sixteen days she lived with her daughter Alta until that time and she had been a woman of strength and courage. But the dreaded disease finally laid her low. She was a woman whose great ambition was to be busy, never finding time for idle hands. To her children she was a blessed good mother and to her neighbors of which were numberless she was a dear good friend. She leaves to mourn her loss, one son and one daughter, Ira J. Ross and Alta O. Ross, two grandsons, John Davison Ross of Denver, Colo. and Robert Walker Ross at home. Besides one brother, William S. Gibbs of Mooresville, there are four sisters, Mrs. Eliza J. Woods of Danville, Ind., Mrs. Lydia Pearcy Thacker of Frankfort, Ind., Miss Rosa Gibbs of Plainfield, Indiana, and Mrs. Dollie Thompson of Indianapolis, Indiana, also a host of other relatives and friends. Five brothers have preceded her to that great beyond. In early life she was united to the Methodist church at Bartlett chapel at the age of seven years, and in which church she still holds her membership. She was a member of the Ladies Aid society at Gem, Indiana and to this beloved daughter Alta who nursed and cared for mother three long years and sixteen days, who gave up pleasures and made every sacrifice for our dear mother. Only on Tuesday evening a short week ago Mother says, Alta, dear, Alta, I have raised you and your life has been spared for a purpose and this is the purpose. We have never been parted, but we part to meet again in Heaven. You have faithfully done your duty and may God bless you dear child. There will be many stars, many stars in your crown and I go to sleep in Jesus where no noise, no pain or suffering will ever wake me. Poor Alta, I hate to leave you all, but God will bless and comfort you my dear child. ~~Plainfield Messenger, Plainfield, IN 25 Aug 1927~~ Family links: Parents: George Gibbs (1822 - 1887) Louisa B.
